Wising up with Hosrwyse

Long Crendon's Location
Wednesday afternoon takes us to our second and last stop of the day, Horsewyse in Long Crendon.

Horsewyse is a riding school facility, catering for children, families, teachers, social workers and carers who may have or have experienced the following problems:

  • Emotional and behavioural difficulties
  • Autistic spectrum
  • Children and young excluded from school

The programme, run by Neil and Karen Smith, was developed as a result of Neil's practical experience with both children and horses. Having ridden since a young age and with a history of equestrian disciplines under his belt (show jumping, team chasing, polo and polocrosse), Neil has also worked in the social and private care system.
Karen, who has always loved horses, has a PhD in Equine Excercise Physiology.

Together, they wanted to share the benefits they have both enjoyed through horses to others and provide a unique riding opportunity.

The aim of Horsewyse, and the work that Neil and Karen do, is to harness the empathy between horse and human and help youngsters overcome personal challenges, build self-etseem and develop communication skills.

The children who attend, aged between 8-19, are taught about how to understand equine behaviour  and given the opportunity to undertake 'groundwork' tasks like catching, leading the horses and grooming, which all helps develop trust and confidence. These sessions can be provided for individuals, groups or families according to everyone's needs.

There most recent project, at Horsewyse, has involved them working with children who have high-functioning Aspergers Syndrome, helping them to develop empathetic and team-work skills.

Horsewyse creates a life changing opportunity and unique experience for so many and establishes a lasting bond between man and animal for life.
