M.A.R.E.S Amersham

Our third and final stop for Friday takes us to M.A.R.E.S.

M.A.R.E.S (Minorities Agricultural & Rural Equestrian Skills) is a unique registered charity based in the beautiful countryside of Old Amersham, Buckinghamshire, U.K. offering day therapy and skills training in agricultural, horticultural and equestrian activities for people who are experiencing difficulties in their lives, people with mental health difficulties or people who are excluded, disadvantaged or isolated (service users).

MARES aim is to provide a good green space, socially and environmentally, in which learning agri-equestrian skills enhances psychological and physical health, whilst forging social, inter-cultural and inter-racial links between city and countryside.

MARES mission statement is simple, MARES:

Motivates and supports individuals with mental health difficulties. We actively seek to encourage cultural and social inclusion in the countryside by involving black minority ethnic (BME) communities in our activities.

Always provides a supportive, safe, fun and therapeutic environment for individuals to learn and develop new skills.

Reaches out to a variety of individuals in order to overcome social disadvantage and exclusion.

Establishes social, intercultural and inter racial links between the city and the countryside.

Supports and encourages psychological and physical health through outside work with horses and agriculture.

Although MARES is our third visit during the week that works with horses as a therapeutic tool, it is important to emphasis that the work all three of the organisations are doing is very different in their own right BUT  are all having amazing results.

For examples MARES belief that the rural setting in which they are located and the environment around them makes a enormous impact on the people who come to them.
